What is an open air photo booth?
An open air photo booth is exactly what the name suggests: a camera and light on a stand pointed at a backdrop, with no walls or curtain around the guests. Most setups pair a DSLR or tablet camera with a softbox or ring light, a touchscreen for starting the session, and a printer tucked under the stand.
Because there is no enclosure, the only limit on the shot is how wide the backdrop is. Groups of eight or ten fit in a single frame, which is why open air is the default choice for receptions and company parties where guests arrive in clusters rather than pairs.
It is also the least demanding style to place. A stand and a backdrop take a corner rather than a floor plan, load-in is quick, and vendors can usually work around a venue’s odd angles, low ceilings, or last-minute room changes.
How it works on the day
- 1The vendor sets up a backdrop, a camera on a stand, and a light, usually in a corner of the room.
- 2Guests tap a touchscreen to start, and the camera fires a burst of three or four photos with a countdown between each.
- 3A printer under the stand produces strips or 4x6 prints in roughly fifteen seconds.
- 4Copies are texted or emailed on the spot, with the full gallery shared after the event.
Best for
- Weddings and receptions where guests want a print to take home
- Large groups — an open frame fits far more people than an enclosure
- Corporate events using a branded backdrop and print template
- Rooms too tight or oddly shaped to take a full enclosure
Space, power, and access
- Roughly 8 x 8 ft of floor space, plus room in front for the line
- A standard outlet within about 25 ft, or an extension run the vendor supplies
- Ceiling height of 8 ft or more to clear the backdrop stand
- Flat, level ground — outdoors, ask about wind, since a backdrop stand is the first thing to go over

What to ask a open air photo booth vendor
- Whether prints are unlimited or capped at one per session
- Which backdrops are included and which cost extra
- Whether the camera is a DSLR or a tablet — the difference shows in dim rooms
- Whether an attendant stays for the full rental window
Prices are set by each vendor and move with hours of coverage, travel, prints, and props, so it is worth requesting quotes from more than one before booking. Many vendors run several styles: 299 of the 602 listed here also offer 360 photo booths.
Open Air photo booth questions
How many people fit in an open air photo booth?
There is no enclosure to limit the group, so the real constraint is the width of the backdrop and the camera’s field of view. Most setups comfortably frame eight to ten people, and vendors can pull the camera back further if you tell them to expect large group shots.
Does an open air booth still print photos?
Usually yes. Most open air rentals include a printer under the camera stand producing strips or 4x6 prints in about fifteen seconds, alongside digital copies by text or email. Confirm prints are included in the rate rather than billed as an add-on.
Can an open air booth be set up outdoors?
Generally yes, with two caveats. The backdrop stand needs weights or a sheltered spot in any wind, and direct sun or fading daylight will fight the booth’s own lighting. Ask about a covered location and whether the vendor brings a battery or needs an outlet.
